History

Company’s founder Axel Bergkvist was born on May 28, 1900 as the first son to his father Anders who was a manager in a sawmill. Axel first educated himself in England and Germany, and then founded his own company in 1926 with cooperation from his family and relatives. It was Sweden Handelsbank from which he loaned the capital, and the bank is our main bank up to this date.

Axel always had adventurous projects and continued actively working until he passed away in 1970. He was rarely to be found in his office but often at timber sorting site or at sawing facility. His three sons also helped the father. Ragnar, Axel’s eldest son, took over and ran the company until 1986. During Ragnar’s management the company expanded through a purchase of other sawmill and acres of forests. Bengt, Axel’s second son, contributed to the development of the sawing technology and was highly spoken as an innovator in the industry. Björn, Axel’s third son was the one who led the project to incorporate the latest sawing technology in Europe.

Bergkvist’s third generation joined the company in 70’s. Ulf, Ragnar’s eldest son, started to deal with purchasing of timber, and Olle, Ulf’s brother, took over that position when Ulf succeeded the company in 1986. Business expanded between 1980-1990. A trading company Bergkvist-Växjö was established in Växjö, the southern part of Sweden (still in business), and a sawmill was established in the Baltic country (this sawmill was sold in 2006 to concentrate more in the business in Insjön).

In 2000 we invested together with AB Karl Hedin and Moelven Timber AS to establish a raw material company Weda Skog AB (they buy in timber for the three owning companies). Today the company is owned by Bergkvist-Insjön AB (70%) and Moelven Industrier ASA (30%). Several enormous facility investments were carried on at the same time. Our yearly production volume became 320,000m³, we built a container terminal with Tomoku Hus AB, and in 2006 we opened our new sawing facility with the latest technology EWD during company’s 80th annual celebration.

We are constantly investing in our facilities, and the extension of the drying facility is presently carried on.

In 2009 Per-Ragnar, Bergkvist’s fourth generation and Ulf’s eldest son joined the company and is responsible for purchasing of timber.
